This spring, eight intrepid Rock Warriors (aka members of OET’s Central Oregon chapter) took to the Maston trail system to de-rock one of the new horse trails. This delightful trail system lies between Bend and Redmond and is becoming a very popular winter riding spot, because it is close to town and its very sandy soil provides great winter footing.
But, the trail goes across a number of rock outcroppings. To make it a bit more pleasant for the horses, it’s necessary to remove the rocks from the trails. Some of the rocks can be kicked off the trail, but others have to be dug out with picks. The worst ones are the rocks that only stick up an inch above the ground. They might be small rocks you can pop out with an easy swing, or they might go down a foot into the ground and be 18 inches across. You just never know.
The group de-rocked five miles of trail at this work party. Hats off to the Central Oregon Rock Warriers: Ann Dacy, Cathy Pritchett, Diana Pyle, Gayla Nelson, Jay Pyle, Kim McCarrel, Pat Melchiori, and Wendy Soltys!
