The Northwest Chapter of Oregon Equestrian Trails partnered with the Territorial Riders Chapter of the Back Country Horsemen of Oregon to put on a mini horse packing clinic and demonstration.
This members only event (BCH or OET Members Only) was well attended, there were more than 50 in attendance. We learned about Leave No Trace, information on preparations for both livestock and people, keep your loads even, and above all, keep things simple to begin with! Also covered was:
- Highline and feeding, knots and knot eliminators of all kinds.
- Hobbles and types, how to start hobbling and picketing by front leg.
- Packing on your riding horse
- Planning your trip who to get information from
- The need for compass and map reading
- Planning supplies needed
- Taking a pack animal
- Types of pack saddles
- Advantages and disadvantages of a pack animal
- How to pack a pack animal and weight they can carry
