We recently received information about Willow Prairie Horse Camp from Rogue Valley member Debbie Davenport:
The Rogue River National Forest recently proposed turning over management of six campgrounds to Rogue Recreation, Inc. This is a locally based concessionaire who already operates eight campgrounds in the area. The Forest Service has received positive feedback from campers about Rogue Recreation’s attention to the campgrounds they now manage.
One of the six camps is Willow Prairie Horse Camp. I spoke to Rogue Recreation owner, Alica Acosta, about the club’s involvement with Willow Prairie, and she welcomed the clubs continued help in opening the camp for summer. This will be the first horse camp she has operated, so she’s open to suggestions and help. She also said she will be in touch with Don Burke about continuing as the camp host. Don is very excited about the prospect, because Rogue Recreation actually pays their hosts!
According to the Forest Service there will be no change to the current $10 camping fee and reservations will still be available through recreation.gov.
Personally, I feel this is a good move. Rogue Recreation has more manpower and more reason (financial gain) to maintain the camp to a positive standard.
The Forest Service welcomes public comments until February 28.
